Pearls and Lace

The year is 2012, it’s winter, and a fresh designer released an oversized coat on the runway. You now have found new purposes for the 40x pink coat your aunt gifted you. You, of course,  insist on wearing it to school for the remainder of the winter. Fast forward a couple of years later and sleeves are puffier, the details more dramatic and there is an abundance of pearls. Yes, you guessed correctly, we’re speaking of the queen of pearls Simone Rocha.

The daughter of famous Irish-based designer, John a Rocha, Simone Rocha forged her own path and gain success through her own aesthetic signature silhouettes chunky shoes, and pearl accessories. More famously and possibly the most wanted item, the pearl egg bag. Easily identified are the round puffed shoulders, long waist skirts, volumes and volumes of lace, and embellished pearl and crystal details.

Year after year Simone Rocha graces us with a collection fit for a modern-day princess. You know the ones with the big over-the-ear wired headphones, motorcycle jackets over vintage peignoir, platform boots and a pearl crown just walk their dogs and pick up coffee.

During the London fashion weekend, I was brought to tears by the number of looks that Simone Rocha inspired. I later found out they were actually attending the show, but nevertheless, I was moved.

From this process, I also came across two young musicians, who both deserve their own posts (coming soon) Damsel and Griff. They were dressed in the most memorable ensembles at London Fashion Week. After a few quick scrolls, it is evident how much they both embody the brand in their own unique way. Be sure to check out their pages and their music! (not sponsored).

I was inspired to create my own Simone Rocha look using pieces from my closet:

  • A long circle skirt for volume
  • A vintage long-sleve peignoir
  • A puff sleeve coat from the limited edition Simone Rocha x hm launched in the spring of 2021 (Best investment)
  • Another layer of vintage peignoir, short-sleeved
  • Knit socks
  • Chunky loafers
  • Pearl headband
  • Pearl headband as a necklace
  • Vintage clip Pearl earrings
  • And tiny pearls makeup stickers placed anywhere I thought made sense.

This is your sign to go play dress up and recreate runway looks.

Last but certainly not least, Luna in Simone-Rocha-esque look. She was made for this look. (with a little help from my amateur photoshop for her accessories.)
